Tracking your civil service application and exam status keeps you informed about where you stand in the hiring process. Kern County provides multiple ways to check your status and stay updated on your application progress.
Log into the Civil Service portal using the confirmation number you received when you submitted your application. The portal is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Enter your confirmation number and the email address you used on your application. If you forgot your confirmation number, use the password reset feature or contact Civil Service for assistance. Keep your login credentials secure and do not share them with anyone.
Your application status shows as received, under review, or processed. "Received" means the Civil Service Commission has your application and will begin reviewing it soon. "Under review" means staff are evaluating your application to determine if you meet the minimum qualifications for the position. "Processed" means your application review is complete and you will receive notification about the next steps. The review process typically takes two to four weeks depending on the number of applications received for the position.
Applications that do not meet minimum qualifications receive a status of "not eligible." You will receive an email explaining which qualifications you did not meet. You may submit additional documentation within five business days if you believe the decision was made in error. Contact Civil Service with questions about eligibility determinations or required qualifications.
If your application meets minimum qualifications, you advance to the examination phase. You receive an email with exam details including the date, time, location, and format. Exams may be written tests, practical skills demonstrations, oral interviews, or a combination of formats. The email includes preparation instructions and any materials you should bring to the exam. Respond to the exam invitation promptly to confirm your attendance.
Exam scores post within 10 business days after the test date. Log into the portal to view your score and ranking on the eligible list. The eligible list shows all candidates who passed the exam ranked by their scores. Departments hire from the top ranks of the eligible list. Your position on the list determines when you might be called for an interview. Eligible lists remain active for six months to one year depending on the position.
You receive email notifications at each status change throughout the process. Check your email regularly including your spam and junk folders. Add the Civil Service Commission email address to your contacts to ensure messages are delivered to your inbox. Email notifications include application status updates, exam invitations, score reports, interview requests, and hiring decisions.
If you are selected for an interview, the hiring department contacts you directly. The department, not Civil Service, conducts interviews and makes final hiring decisions. Prepare for your interview by reviewing the job posting, researching the department, and practicing answers to common interview questions. Bring copies of your resume and any requested documents to the interview.
Contact Civil Service at [contact info] if your status does not update within the expected timeframe. Delays may occur during high-volume hiring periods or when applications require additional documentation. Civil Service staff respond to inquiries within two business days. Have your confirmation number ready when you call or email to help staff locate your application quickly.
You may withdraw your application at any time before a hiring decision is made. Log into the portal and select "withdraw application" or contact Civil Service directly. Withdrawn applications cannot be reinstated. You must submit a new application if the position is posted again in the future.
Multiple applications for different positions are tracked separately. Each application has its own confirmation number and status. Check each application individually in the portal. You may be at different stages for different positions depending on when you applied and the hiring timeline for each position.
Review Section 301.00 of the Civil Service Commission Rules for complete information about application procedures, examination processes, eligible lists, and hiring protocols. The rules explain your rights and responsibilities as an applicant, appeal procedures if you disagree with decisions, and how hiring decisions are made. The Civil Service Commission Rules are available on the county website under the Civil Service section.
